Anand Bazaar

This year's edition of the annual Anand Bazaar, the local celebration marking the anniversary of India's independence from British rule, lines up with that momentous day in Indian history 62 years ago: Aug. 15, 1947. Anand (pronounced "Aah-nundh") means "happiness" in Sanskrit. So expect many festive activities, including a parade featuring American and Indian flags, live entertainment (singers and musicians from India), a variety of food and a fireworks finale.

Price: $5 in advance, $8 at the gate

It’s billed as the largest video game tournament and party in North America. The celebration features an area where gamers can bring their computers to get together and play, drawings and contests, product demos and exhibits, pro gamers competing for $50,000 in cash, and more.

Price: Free

Starts Aug. 13 at 9 a.m. and runs through Aug. 16 at noon. Most activities are Aug. 13 through Aug. 15 (exhibit hours on those days are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Harvest and Grape Stomp

at Delaney Vineyards & Winery, Grapevine, TX

Pick grapes off the vine and give your legs a workout in the vat at the annual Harvest and Grape Stomp at Grapevine's Delaney Vineyards & Winery. The event includes wine tastings (for those of legal drinking age), live music and arts and crafts items for sale. Aug. 15 from 7 a.m. to noon. (harvesting begins at 7 a.m., grape stomp at 10 a.m.).
